The Vegetarian Diet Pyramid

We have seen the SG Healthy diet pyramid as well as a similar version from the USA. Both versions have something in common, which is the inclusion of meat-related food products.

Just to add some variety to the food pyramid that we are so familiar with by now, here's an atypical one that has been tailored to suit the needs of vegetarians.

Notice the differences?

A typical vegetarian's diet is high in dietary fibre. Due to the low biological value of plant proteins (in comparison to animal proteins), vegetarians are advised to consume a larger amount of legumes which would have been classified under 'Meat & alternatives' in usual HDP. Therefore, you can see that portions for 'whole grains' and 'legumes' are about the same size as represented graphically in the vegetarian diet pyramid.

Eating too much foods rich in saturated fats and cholesterol (e.g. seafood, meat products) can increase the risk of heart diseases, stroke and some cancers. You may want to know that plant foods are essentially free of cholesterol, so there are indeed some incentives to adopting a rabbit's diet!
